The two bi-products of wastewater treatment are compost and biogas.
Compost:
The solid wastes that settle at the bottom in the primary treatment of water are called sludge, which mainly consists of human and animal faeces, and fruit and vegetable wastes.
This sludge can be dried and used as organic compost.
Biogas:
In the secondary treatment of water, the organic matter in the sludge is broken down with the help of bacteria and as a result of this process, biogas is produced.
Biogas can be used either as fuel or to generate electricity.
