Hormones are the body's chemical messengers which travel in our bloodstream to tissues or organs to perform various functions.
Ovary:
Ovary is a female reproductive organ, which is used to produce eggs or female germ cells.
The two hormones secreted by ovaries are progesterone and estrogen.
Functions:
Estrogen is a sex hormone whose main function is to assist the growth of the breast during puberty, help in the growth of the uterus lining during menstruation, and maintain bone strength.
Progesterone is another hormone that is responsible for maintaining the early stages of pregnancy by thickening the uterine wall. It also plays important role in the menstrual cycle.
The ovaries release one egg every month and the uterine walls thicken to nourish the eggs. But when the eggs are not fertilized the uterine walls break and blood and mucous come out through the vagina. This phenomenon is called menstruation.
