The two organic compounds which have the same molecular formula $C_{2} H_{6} O$ are dimethyl ether $(C H_{3} - O - C H_{3})$ and ethanol $(C H_{3} C H_{2} - O - H)$ .
Dimethyl ether $(C H_{3} - O - C H_{3})$ will not react with $P C l_{5}$ .
Ethanol $(C H_{3} C H_{2} - O - H)$ will react with $P C l_{5}$ .
$C H_{3} C H_{2} - O - H + P C l_{5} Δ - \to C H_{3} C H_{2} - C l + H C l + P O C l_{3}$
