  5. Vessels are long, straight chains made up of tough vessel elements and long-dead cells.
  6. The only living cell in the xylem, the xylem parenchyma, has thin cell walls, large vacuoles, a big nucleus, and protoplasts.
  7. Xylem fiber is the thick lignified fibers that are made up of the dead sclerenchyma cells.
