Types of teeth in humans:

  1. Humans are heterodont:
  2. All teeth in the jaws are dissimilar in shape and structure.
  3. On the basis of their function, teeth are of four types:

(a) Incisors:

  1. These teeth are straight with sharp cutting edges.
  2. They are used for cutting.


(b) Canines:

  1. These teeth are conical and sharp and present in carnivores.
  2. These teeth are used for tearing the flesh.


(c) Premolars:

  1. These teeth are stout with flat surfaces bearing grooves and ridges.
  2. These are used for masticating the food.


(d) Molars:

  1. Molars are situated behind premolars.
  2. These teeth are also flat and broad bearing grooves and ridges.
  3. These are also used for masticating and grinding the food.
