Sweat Glands:

  1. Sweat glands are a type of exocrine gland, that produces and secrete substances onto an epithelial surface by way of a duct.
  2. Sweat is produced by sweat glands in the deeper layer of the skin.
  3. Sweat glands occur all over the body but are concentrated on the areas like the forehead, the armpits, the palms, and the feet' soles.
  4. Sweat is mainly made up of water, but it also contains some salts.
  5. It helps the body to lower the temperature.

Modifications:

  1. Ceruminous glands: The ceruminous glands are present in the skin of the human external auditory canal and are modified sweat glands. They produce ear wax. Ear wax protects the ear canal against physical damage and microbial invasion.
  2. Mammary glands: Functionally, the mammary glands produce milk; structurally, they have modified sweat glands. Mammary glands, are present in both sexes but are functional only in the female.
  3. Ciliary glands: Ciliary glands are modified sweat glands that are found on the margin of the eyelid.
