Hepatic portal system:

The hepatic portal vein is formed by joining three veins (splenic vein, superior mesenteric, inferior mesenteric) which brings blood from different regions of the gastrointestinal tract and on entering the liver it branches and drains the blood into the hepatic sinuses. Hepatic vein collects the blood from the liver and drains it into the inferior vena cava. From here, it enters the systemic circulation.
