Question

Name the white cottony growth that develops on the rotting bread

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student,

Bread mould (fungus) forms white cottony growth on the rotting bread. Bread moulds are saprophytes which feed on dead and decay organic matter. They secrete digestive juices directly on the food. The enzymes present in digestive juice breaks down the food and then it is absorbed by the bread mould. Such nutrition is known as saprophytic nutrition.

Regards.
