Question

Name three chemicals made from common salt or Sodium Chloride.

Solution

Sodium chloride:

  1. Salt is an inorganic substance formed when the elements sodium (Na) and chloride (Cl) combine to create white, crystalline cubes.
  2. It's soluble in water. They are white crystals that have no odor but do have a flavor. It is a good conductor of electricity in its aqueous condition due to the unrestricted movement of the ions.
  3. It is used to make a variety of compounds, including sodium hydroxide, baking soda, and washing soda.

Sodium hydroxide:

  1. Chlorine and sodium ions are produced when salt is electrolyzed. Sodium combines with water in the mercury cell to produce sodium hydroxide and hydrogen as a by-product. 2NaCl(s)Sodiumchloride+2H2O(l)Water2NaOH(aq)Sodiumhydroxide+Cl2(g)Chlorine+H2(g)Hydrogen
  2. Sodium hydroxide (NaOH), or caustic soda, is a chemical compound with a wide range of applications.
  3. It is used in the production of detergents and soaps, as well as in food preservatives to prevent the formation of germs

Baking soda:

  1. Sodium bicarbonate, also called as baking soda or bicarbonate of soda, has the formulaNaHCO3. A sodium cation and a bicarbonate anion make up this salt.
  2. Baking soda is made using the Solvay Process, which involves allowing Sodium chloride, Carbon dioxide, water, and Ammonia to react.NaCl(s)Sodiumchloride+CO2(g)Carbondioxide+NH3(g)Ammonia+H2O(l)WaterNH4Cl(s)Ammoniumchloride+NaHCO3(s)Sodiumhydrogencarbonate
  3. It's used as a mouthwash, air freshener, and heartburn neutralizer.

Washing Soda:

  1. The inorganic molecule sodium carbonate, Na2CO3.10H2O(also known as washing soda, soda ash), and its many hydrates. All forms are water-soluble, odorless, and white salts that produce moderately alkaline solutions in water.
  2. Solvay's process is used to make washing soda. In this method, Sodium chloride, Ammonia, and Carbon dioxide react in water. Sodium bicarbonate is first obtained, which is then heated to produce Sodium carbonate.NaCl(s)Sodiumchloride+NH3(g)Ammonia+CO2(g)Carbondioxide+H2O(l)WaterNaHCO3(s)Sodiumhydrogencarbonate+NH4Cl2(s)Ammoniumchloride,NaHCO3(s)SodiumhydrogencarbonateNa2CO3(s)Sodiumcarbonate+H2O(l)Water+CO2(g)Carbondioxide
  3. Finally, Sodium carbonate is recrystallized to make washing soda. Na2CO3(s)Sodiumcarbonate+10H2O(l)WaterNa2CO3.10H2OWashingSoda(s)
  4. For cleaning burnt-on oil from kitchen utensils, we use washing soda. It is popular in the soap, glass, and paper industries.

Therefore, Sodium hydroxide, baking soda, and washing soda are made from Sodium chloride.
