Solution

The three states of matter are solid, liquid and gas.

The characteristic property of solid-

  1. Solids have definite volume and definite shape.
  2. The force of attraction between the molecules is strongest.

The characteristic property of liquid-

  1. Liquids have definite volume but no definite shape. They acquire the shape of the container in which it is kept.
  2. The force of attraction between the particles is weaker than in solids but stronger than in gases.

The characteristic property of gas-

  1. Gases have neither definite volume nor definite shape. They try to fill the whole space available.
  2. The force of attraction between the particles is the weakest, practically negligible.
