Solution

Step1: Heating effect of current

  1. When an electric current is passed through a conductor, it will generate heat due to the hindrance caused by the conductor to the flowing current.
  2. The amount of work done in overcoming the hindrance to the current generates heat in that conductor.
  3. This happens due to the conversion of some amount of electric energy passing through the conductor into heat energy.
  4. The heating effect of current is used – Geyser and room heater.

Step 2: Magnetic effect of current

  1. A magnetic field is a field of force that is created by magnetic dipoles and moving electric charges.
  2. It exerts a force on other nearby moving charges and magnetic dipoles.
  3. It is a vector quantity as it has both magnitude and direction.
  4. Magnetic effect of current is used in – Electric bell, Cranes to lift magnetic material.

Thus, geysers and room heaters are examples of the heating effect of current whereas magnetic effects of current are used in electric bells and magnetic cranes.
