Solution

Pleura:

The lungs are surrounded by two membranes called pleural membranes and the space between these membranes is called the pleural cavity.

Two layers of pleura are:

  1. The outer pleura (parietal pleura): It is attached to the chest wall.
  2. The inner pleura (visceral pleura): It covers the lungs and adjoining structures.
  1. These membranes secrete an oily substance called pleural fluid that is present in the pleural cavity.
  2. It acts as a lubricant to reduce friction between the lungs and the thoracic wall during breathing.
