Question

Name two metal which will displace Hydrogen from dilute acids, and two metals which will not displace.

Solution

  • Metals that can lose electrons more easily are more reactive than Hydrogen.
  • Metals with a lower ability to lose electrons than hydrogen are less reactive.
  • The metal which is more reactive than Hydrogen (or the metals which are placed above hydrogen in the reactivity series) displaces Hydrogen from the dilute acid solution.

Thus, Potassium and Barium are the metals that are more reactive than Hydrogen and displace Hydrogen from dilute acid solution.

  • The metal which is less reactive than Hydrogen (or the metals which are placed below hydrogen in the reactivity series) does not displace Hydrogen from the dilute acid solution.

Thus, Copper and Mercury are metals that are less reactive than Hydrogen and do not displace Hydrogen from dilute acids.
