Halogens: ‘Halo’ means salt and ‘gens’ means forming or producing, which means “salt formers”. Group 17 elements are called “Halogens” as they are salt formers.
They have valency equals to 1, as they have 7 electrons in their outermost shell so they accept 1 electron to complete their octate in order to attain nearest noble gas configuration and gain stability.
Most of them are highly reactive non-metals as their electron gain enthalpy is high. They easily accept electrons to form negative ions.
Molecules of halogens exists in diatomic form.
At room temperature Fluorine and Chlorine are gases but Bromine is a liquid non-metal, Iodine and Astatine are solids.
Hence, Fluorine belongs to group 17 and elements from this group are known as halogens. Two more elements from this group would be Chlorine and Bromine
