Soft water is surface water that contains low concentrations of ions (particularly low in ions of calcium and magnesium).

(i) Natural sources of soft water are rainwater, drainage basin of rivers and water obtained from melted snow.

(ii) Man-made sources of soft water are distilled water, amn-made canals and hand pumps.
