Question

Neha is pushing a box having wheels with a force of 40N. Prashant joins in and starts pushing the box with a force of same magnitude and in the same direction.

a) What will be the net force on the box? What will be the direction of motion of object with respect to the applied force?

b) which type of force will be exerted on the wheels while the box is pushed?

c) What will happen to the motion of the box if Prashant exerts force of lesser magnitude and in the direction opposite to that of Neha?

Solution

a) Both are pushing in same direction , so forces are added.
So net force =force of Neha + prashanth = 40+40=80N.
The direction of motion of body is the same as the direction of applied force. The body moves in the direction in which force is applied.

b) At rest, forces in wheel are
1) Weight of box
2) Normal reaction from ground
Both of these are equal and opposite and cancels each other.

During motion,
1) weight of body acts downward
2) normal reaction acts upwards
3) Due to force applied, a reaction force acts on wheel
4) friction between wheel and ground.

c)Prashanth applies opposite force but lesser in magnitude than Neha.
Now,
As forces are opposite in direction,
Net force on body = Force of Neha - force of prashant..
As force by prashant is lower, box moves in direction in which neha pushes box, but force will be less than 40N.

The Net force will be differnce between force applied by Neha and prashant.
