Solution

Let the number of skirts be x
Let the number of pants be y
According to question
No. of skirts are two less than twice the no. of pants.
i.e., x=2y2 ------------------------- 1

No. of skirts is four less than four times the no. of pants
i.e., x=4y4 ------------------------- 2

Subtracting 1 from 2
x=4y4
x=2y2
–––––––––––––
0=2y2
2y=2
y=1

Putting y=1 in equation 1
x=2y2=2(1)2
=0

No. of skirts purchased =0
No. of pants purchased =1
