Solution

The correct option is C Hydrochory
Nelumbo fruit is the etaerio of achenes which is embedded in spongy, lightweight thalamus.
Anemochory is seed or fruit dispersal by wind. Fruits which are dispersed by anemochory should be lightweight and have some morphological characteristics as wings, hairs. But Nelumbo fruit is a type of aggregate fruit and does not possess any morphological characteristics.
Zoochory is seed or fruit dispersal by animals. Such seeds or fruits possess hooks, spines or sticky glands. Nelumbo fruit does possess any of them.
Autochory is also called as self-dispersal mechanism in which the fruit at maturity burst opens with a jerk and scatters its seeds here and there. Dry, capsular fruits show autochory. Nelumbo is a wetland plant. Its fruit does not show autochory.
As said above, Nelumbo fruit is spongy and light weight which enables it to float on water.
Therefore, the correct answer is option C.
