Solution

The correct option is A

exothermic reaction

Neutralization reaction

Reaction between an acid and a base forming salt and Water (H2O) is called a neutralization reaction.

Acid+BaseSalt+Water

For example, Hydrochloric acid (HCl) reacts with Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) base to form Sodium chloride (NaCl) salt and Water.

HCl+NaOHNaCl+H2O

(Hydro- (Sodium (Sodium (Water)

chloric acid) hydroxide) chloride)

In this reaction, the proton from the acid reacts with the hydroxide ion from the base to form water.

H++OH-H2O

(A) Acids and bases dissociate into ions in solution. The protos from the acid and the hydroxide ions from the base form water in the solution. The O-H bond in water is a strong covalent bond. Therefore, formation of these bonds release energy. Neutralization involves formation of covalent bond between Oxygen (O) and Hydrogen (H) and is exothermic. Therefore, option (A) is correct.

(B) Reactions which require absorption of heat are called endothermic reactions. Since formation of Water does not require energy, Neutralization reaction is not endothermic. Option (B) is incorrect.

(C) Neutralization reactions does not involve transfer of electrons. Therefore, it is not an oxidation reaction. Option (C) is incorrect.

(D) Since the correct option is available, option (D) is incorrect.

The correct option is (A) exothermic.
