Newland's gave the law of octaves. Following questions are based on this law.
(i) How many elements were known at the time of Newland?
(ii) If one considered nitrogen as the first member of Newland's octaves, then which element is present at the eighth position from it?
(iii) "Newland adjusted two dissimilar elements under the same slot". Comment on this statement.

Elements known at that time:-

  1. In 1866, John Newland, arranged the known elements in increasing order of atomic masses and found that every eighth element had properties similar to that of the first. At that time only 56 elements were known.

The law of octaves:-

  1. Newland arranged all the 56 known elements in increasing order of their atomic masses and found that every eighth element had properties similar to that of the first.
  2. He compared this to the octaves found in music. Hence this was called “the law of octaves”.
  3. If we consider Nitrogen as the first member then according to the law of octaves the eighth element is Phosphorus.

Dissimilar elements under the same slot:-

  1. Newland adjusted two dissimilar elements into the same slot.
  2. For example, Cobalt and Nickel were in the same slot and these were placed in the same column of fluorine, chlorine and bromine, which have different properties.
  3. This was one of the major drawbacks of Newland's octave law.

Final answer:-

(i) Only 56 elements were known at that time.

(ii) According to the law of octave, if nitrogen is the first element, then the element present at the eighth position will be Phosphorus.

(iii) Newland adjusted two dissimilar elements under the same slot which was a major drawback in his law.
