Question

Nickel forms a compound with carbon monoxide, Nix(CO)y. To determine its formula, you carefully heat a 0.0973 g sample in air to convert the nickel to 0.0426 g of NiO and the CO to 0.100gCO2. If the empirical formula is of the form Nix(CO)y[Ni=58.7], then x+y is :

Solution

The sample is heated in air to convert the Ni to NiO and CO to CO2.
The reaction is as shown below:
Nix(CO)yxNiO+yCO2
(58.7x+30y) 74.7x 44y

74.7x44y=0.04260.10

xy=0.25=14
Thus, empiricalformulais=Ni(CO)4
Hence, x+y=1+4=5
