Provided a metal piece and a thread, what else is necessarily required to find out if the metal piece is a magnet or not?
We do not require anything more.
If the piece is a magnet, it comes to rest in the North-South direction when suspended freely with a thread. This is because, the north pole of the magnet is attracted by the Earth's south pole (geographical north pole) and the south pole of the magnet is attracted by the Earth's north pole (geographical south pole). So, we do not need anything more.
