  • Ninhydrin test is a type of chemical test which is used to determine the presence of amines or α-amino acids.
  • Ninhydrin is chemical compound with molecular formula C9H6O4 and has an IUPAC name of 2,2-dihydroxyindane-1,3-dione.
  • It is reacted to an analyte, which produces a deep blue colour structure which is also called the Rehmann'a purple.
  • This colour indicates that there is presence of Ammonia(NH3) primary/secondary amines, or amino acids in the given analyte.
