Question

Niobium is found to crystallize with bcc structure and found to have the density of 8.55 g cm3 Determine the atomic radius of niobium if its atomic mass is 93u.

Open in App
Solution

Given :- Density ρ=8.55 g cm3

No. of atoms in the unit cell of BCC lattice =2

Avagadro's no. Na=6.022×1023

ρ=ZMa3NAρa3NA=ZMa3=ZMρNA

a3=93×28.55×6.022×1023=3.61×1023 cm3

a=3.3×108 cm ( by taking cube root)
For BCC structure, r=a34

r=3.3×10834=3.3×108×1.7324=1.43×108 cm
