nitrogenase, which convert atmospheric nitrogen to ammonium ($N{H}_4^{+}$), nitrite ($N{O}_2^{-}$) or nitrate ($N{O}_3^{-}$). But nitrogenase enzyme is susceptible to destruction by elemental form of oxygen. Due to this, many nitrogen fixing bacteria live in anaerobic environment as in root nodules.
