Question

Nitrogen molecule contains a ____covalent bond.

Open in App
Solution

The nitrogen molecule contains a triple covalent bond.

Covalent bond- When two atoms are unable to lose and gain electrons to completely fill their valence shell, they share their valence electrons pairs and form a bond between them to achieve a stable electronic configuration. Such types of bonds formed by sharing of electron pairs are called Covalent bonds.

Types of covalent bonds- There are 3 types of covalent bonds

1. Single bond- This is formed when only 1 pair of electrons are shared between atoms. Example- Hydrogen (H2) molecule has 1 single bond.

2. Double bond- This is formed when two pairs of electrons are shared between atoms. Example- Oxygen (O2) molecule has 1 double bond.

3. Triple bond- This is formed when three pairs of electrons are shared between atoms. Example- Nitrogen (N2) molecule has 1 triple bond.

The structure of nitrogen molecule is-

Hence, the nitrogen molecule contains a triple covalent bond.
