Arber was the first to discover the Type I restriction enzyme. In 1970 Hamilton Smith discovered the type II restriction enzyme. Later Daniel Nathan showed that these enzymes could be used to map the DNA. For their effort, they were awarded the Nobel Prize in 1978.
