Jumping genes are the segment of DNA that are transposable, so these are called as transposons. These segments can move from one location to another on the genome, sometimes creating or reversing mutations and altering the cell's genetic identity and genome size. Segments of DNA that can jump to target sites in the genome were first discovered by Barbara Mc Clintock. She discovered that Indian maize corn have cobs with kernels of different colours. According to her, the light coloured kernels were caused by a segment of DNA that jumped into the genes coding the pigmented kernels, thus inactivating the pigmented kernels. These mobile genes are called transposons or transposable elements.
