The photoreceptor cells are cells present in the retina that are sensitive to light. Nocturnal animals have abundant rod photoreceptor cells. This is because rod photoreceptor cells are responsible for scotopic/twilight or night vision. Cone photoreceptor cells are responsible for daylight or photopic vision and colour vision.
Photoreceptor cells are not present in a region of the retina called the blind spot. Fovea is the central pit of the yellowish pigmented spot called macula lutea present at the posterior pole of the eye lateral to the blind spot.
