NAM is essentially a product of the Cold War era, conceived so that newly independent countries like India could stay out of the global race for supremacy between the US and Soviet Union. The basic idea behind Non-Alignment was to enable newly independent countries to make independent decisions based on the merit of the matter, keeping their national interests and interests of world peace in general.
Non-Alignment was made a foreign policy choice of India. It infact acted as a mirror for India's foreign policy because it was considered the best means no only to give fuller meaning and content to her newly achieved independence but also to ensure socio economic development.India considered cold war as injurious to the international peace and development of the country at the initial stage of independence.
