Question

Non-metals are usually poor conductors of heat and electricity. They are non-lustrous, non-sonorous, non-malleable and coloured. Name the allotropic form of the non-metal which is a good conductor of electricity.

Solution

Good conductor of electricity:-

  1. The conductor is basically a material or substance that will allow the flow of charge in one or more directions.
  2. It allows the electricity to pass through it.
  3. So, the more free electrons present in a metal, the greater would be its conductivity.
  4. Generally, metals are the good conductors of electricity and non-metals are not.
  5. But, there are exceptions too.
  6. Carbon is basically a non-metal, and graphite is its allotropic form which will conduct electricity because of the free electrons present in the valence shell and mobility.

Therefore, graphite is an allotropic form of carbon (non-metal) and is a good conductor of electricity.
