Question

Normal calomel electrode has e.m.f. of 0.67 V at 25oC. Calculate pH of solution. The oxidation potential of calomel electrode on H scale is 0.28V (nearest integer).

Solution

First calculate the potential of hydrogen electrode.
E=EcalomelEHE
0.67=0.28EHE
EHE=0.39V
Now calculate the hydrogen ion concentration.
EHE=E0H0.0592nlogPH2[H+]2
0.39=00.05922log1[H+]2
[H+]=2.51×107M
Hence, the pH of the solution is pH=log[H+]=log2.5×107=6.67
