Phycobilins are more appropriately called phycobiliproteins. They comprise of a bile pigment or phycobilin attached to a protein. The pigment forms the chromophoric moiety of the biliprotein. The bile pigment shows an open chain tetrapyrrole structure. Three classes of biliproteins are recognised namely phycoerythrin, phycocyanin and allophycocyanin. They are mainly found in red (Rhodophyceae) and blue green (Cyanophyceae) algae.
