a. Kalikata during the colonial period became an important place for East Indian company's headquarters.
b. It was called Calcutta by the British.
c. The British built it as a Presidency city establishing civil court, municipal
corporation.
d. The British also built the Fort Williams near the bank of river Hoogly and set up various public buildings.
e. In 1772, Calcutta was made the British capital
f. It came to associated with the city of palaces, rich in culture , in its intellectual life.
g. The Asiatic society of Bengal was founded in 1784.
h. The city became rich and known for its baboo culture a blend of English modern style and Indian traditions.
i. Prominent architectural statues of Calcutta has been in its Maidan most prominent being the Victoria memorial.

j.With British rule, architectural styles, design and layout of the cities changed. New styles were introduced as new cities were built, new buildings came up.. The pointed arches in the buildings and the elongated structures reflected British supremacy.
k. Cantonments were
established which were symbolic of British presence.
f. These areas were defined tree-lined streets, regularly divided building plots and bungalows as the main housing type.

j. Churches and cemeteries, clubs, race and golf courses were also established.
