Simple epithelium is one layer thick. So, every cell is in direct contact with the underlying basement membrane. It is found, where absorption and filtration occur.

They are of 4 types:- Simple squamous, simple cuboidal, simple columnar and simple pseudostratified.

Simple squamous epithelium lines the cavities of alveoli of lungs (the areas where passive diffusion of gases occur) and the walls of the capillaries.

The inner surfaces of salivary and sweat glands are also lined by simple epithelium tissue.
