Solution

(i) (2x 1) + (x 2)

= 2x 1 + x 2

= (2x + x) 1 2

= 3x (1 + 2)

= 3x 3

= 3(x 1)

(ii) (5x 6y) + (2x 3y)

= 5x 6y + 2x 3y

= (5x + 2x) 6y 3y

= 7x (6y + 3y)

= 7x 9y

(iii) (2x 3y) + (3x 2y)

= 2x 3y + 3x 2y

= (2x + 3x) 3y 2y

= 5x (3y + 2y)

= 5x 5y

= 5(xy)

(iv) (x y) + (x y)

= x y + x y

= (x + x) y y

= 2x (y + y)

= 2x 2y

= 2(xy)
