Nucleic acids are biomolecules that serve as genetic information carriers. They are acidic in nature because of phosphoric acid.

Pentose sugar (ribose or deoxyribose) combines with nitrogenous bases to make nucleosides. To this structure, if a phosphoric acid binds, it is known as a nucleotide. The nucleotides polymerize to form a nucleic acid which is also called a polynucleotide structure.

Nitrogenous bases are heterocyclic, aromatic molecules. They are of two types: Purines (Adenine and Guanine) and Pyrimidines (Cytosine, Thymine, and Uracil). In RNA uracil is present instead of thymine.
