Question

Nucleoid is the single circular strand of DNA duplex. Explain?

Open in App
Solution

Nucleoid represents the genetic material of the prokaryotes. Nucleoid is also known as genophore, prochromosome, incipient nucleus and chromoneme.
Unlike the eukaryotic (true) cells, bacteria do not have a membrane enclosed nucleus. The chromosome, a single, continuous strand of DNA, is localized, but not contained, in a region of the cell called the nucleoid. All the other cellular components are scattered throughout the cytoplasm. Nucleoid consists of a single circular strand of DNA duplex which is supercoiled.
