During dimerization of AlCl3, two coordinate bonds are formed. In Al2Cl6 molecule, there are 4 terminal Cl atoms and 2 bridged Cl atoms. These bridged Cl atoms donate their lone pair of electron to 2Al atoms to form 2 coordinate bonds.
