Question

Number of correct statements among the following is:
i) Oxygen has the smallest electron affinity value in group 16
ii) Nitrogen has positive electron gain enthalpy
iii) BeO is amphoteric
iv) He has the highest first ionization energy in the periodic table
v) Cl has the highest electron affinity in the periodic table
vi) In MOH if the electronegativity differnce of M and O is greater than the electronegativity difference of O and H, then the compound will be basic.
vii) H+ is the smallest cation in the periodic table.

Solution

i) Since the oxygen is smaller in size hence electron density is more in O atom. Thus interelectronic repulsion is high and hence it has smallest electron affinity value in group 16 of the periodic table.

ii) Due to stability of half filled electronic configurations, it has positive electron gain enthalpy.

iii) BeO is amphoteric as it has diagonal relationship with Al

iv) As we move from left to right and as we move from bottom to top, ionization energy decreases. Hence He has the highest ionization energy in the periodic table.

v) Cl has higher electron affinity than more electronegative F atom since electron density in F atom is very high.
vi) Greater the electronegativity difference , more ionizable the bond.

vii) Since it has no electron, thus it is the smallest cation.
