Open in App
Solution

Periodic table: The periodic table is the arrangement of elements in the increasing order of their atomic number in the tabular format in columns and rows.

  • The horizontal rows are called ‘periods’ (which go from left to right) and the vertical columns are called ‘groups’ (going from up to down)
  • As of 2016, the periodic table has 118 confirmed elements, from elements 1(Hydrogen) to 118 (Oganesson).
  • Elements 113, 115, 117, and 118, the most recent discoveries, were officially confirmed by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) in December 2015.

Thus, the number of elements in the periodic table is 118.
