Question

Observe the circuit in the figure and match the following (assume q1,q2, and q3 to be the charges on the three capacitors C1,C2 and C3 respectively).

Column I Column II

i. q1( in μC) p. 50
ii. q2( in μC) q. 10/3
iii. q3( in μC) r. 140/3
iv. Potential difference across the 6μF capacitor is (in V) s. 25/3

A
i - q ; ii - r ; iii - p ; iv - s

Solution

The correct option is A i - q ; ii - r ; iii - p ; iv - s
The charges on three plates that are in contact add to zero, because these plates taken together form an isolated system, which cannot receive charges from the batteries.

Thus, q3q1q2=0 ..........(i)
Applying Kirchhoff's law in loop ABCFA and CDEFC , we get

q12q36+10=0
q3+3q1=60 ................(ii)

and
20q24q36=0
3q2+2q3=240 ............(iii)

On solving (i), (ii) and (iii)
q1=103 μC,q2=1403 μC,q3=50 μC

Potential difference across 6μF capacitor is
q36=50μC6μF=253V
