Nitrification is the process by which ammonia is converted to nitrites (NO−2) and then nitrates (NO−3).
During nitrogen fixation cycle, Nitrosomonas bacteria first convert nitrogen gas to nitrite (NO−2) and subsequently NItrobacter convert nitrite to nitrate (NO−3), a plant nutrient. Nitrososcoccus and clostridium are not involved during this process.
