Question

Observe the number line (fig. 1.28) and answer the following questions.
(i) Write the co-ordinates of the points C, S, Q, D
(ii) Name the points whose co-ordinates are 4, 5, 0, -2
(iii) Find d(Q,T), d(E,B), d(O,C), d(O,R)
(iv) Name the points which are at a distance of 4 from point 0.

Solution

(i) The coordinates of the points are as follows:

C=-3S=4Q=2D=-4

(ii) The points whose coordinates are:

4=S5=T0=O-2=B

(iii)

Coordinate of Q=2Coordinate of T=5 As 5>2, d(Q,T) = 5-2 = 3

Coordinate of E=-5Coordinate of B=-2 As -2 >-5, d(Q,T) = -2-(-5) = 3

Coordinate of O=0Coordinate of C=-3 As 0>-3, d(Q,T) = 0-(-3) = 3

Coordinate of O=0Coordinate of R=3 As 3>0, d(Q,T) = 3-0 = 3

(iv) The points which are at a distance of 4 from O are S and D.

Coordinate of O=0Coordinate of S=4 As 4>0, d(S,O) = 4-0 = 4Coordinate of O=0Coordinate of D=-4 As 0>-4, d(D,O) = 0-(-4) = 4
