All of them have the general formula $X_2$. A gradation is observed in their physical state down the group.

Thus, fluorine ($F_2$) and chlorine ($C{l}_2$) are gases. Bromine ($B{r}_2$) is a liquid while iodine ($I_2$) is a solid.
