Question

Obtain an expression for the radius of Bohr orbit for H-atom.

Open in App
Solution

From Bohr's second postulate,
Ln=mvnrn=nh2π---1
where n is an integer, rn is the radius of nth possible orbit and vn is the speed of moving electron in the nth orbit.
the relation between vn and rn is
vn=e4πϵ0mrn
Substituting value of vn from eqn 1 in above eqn, and solving for r we get ,
r=n2h24π2me2×1z
or, r=0.529×n2z˚A
Angstroms, where n= principal quantum number of orbit and Z= atomic number.
