Question

Obtain the binding energy in(MeV)of a nitrogen nucleus given m = 14.00307 u

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student,

Mass of proton = 1.00728 a.m.u

Mass of neutron = 1.00867 a.m.u

Mass of nitrogen = 14.00307 a.m.u

Mass of electron = 0.0005486 a.m.u
N714

Mass of the nucleus = 7(mass of protons) + 7(mass of neutrons)

= 7.05096 + 7.06069

= 14.11165 a.m.u

Mass of nitrogen nucleus = Mass of nitrogen - 7(Mass of electrons)

= 14.00307 - 7 (0.0005486)

= 13.9992298 a.m.u

Mass defect, Δm = Mass of nucleus - Mass of nitrogen nucleus

= 0.1124202 a.m.u

Binding energy of nitrogen nucleus = Δm x 931.5 = 104.719 Mev
