Question

Obtain the expression for the energy stored per unit volume in a charged parallel plate capacitor.

Open in App
Solution

Let in a parallel plate capacitor the plates are 'd' apart, and its charged by Q
Area of plates = A
Volume of capacitor = Ad
charge per unit area,
So, energy stored in it, σ=QA
E=Q22C
also, capacitance is given by : C=Aϵoα
So energy per unit volume,
EV=Q22CV=Q2×d2timesϵ0×Ad=Q22ϵ0A2=σ22t0
