Solution

Mollusca is the phylum in which the octopus is classified.

Mollusca:

  1. Mollusca is important to people because they provide food and jewellery, such as pearls.
  2. They have soft bodies that are triploblastic (three layers of skin) and bilaterally symmetrical (one side's body is a mirror image of the other).
  3. They are also coelomates.

Octopus:

  1. Octopuses normally defend themselves by squirting ink at their predators; also, because they are boneless, they can slip into (and out of) small areas.
  2. They are highly intelligent creatures.
