South West monsoon is the rain bearing seasonal winds that flow from Arabian Sea to the main land of India from the South-West direction. They start to cross India around May, and as per Indian Meteorological Department, the official monsoon season is between June to September. Since this happens in mid-summer, and also the winds give a large quantity of rainfall, they are referred as "Indian Summer Monsoon".

North East monsoon is the weak rain bearing seasonal winds that flow when the South West monsoon retreats from the Indian mainland. They pick-up the moisture mainly from Bay of Bengal and gives rain to many places in India during the months of October and November. For this reason, this monsoon is also called as "Retreating Monsoon" or "Retreating Phase of Indian Summer Monsoon"
